WIMA D.A.CH 2020, Day 5

My right eye is reddening from the constant driving with open visor – a disadvantage of the fabolous weather.
Today, however, thunderstorms are on the agenda and therefore we are riden to the sunny south.
Bella Italia is supposed to enchant us today with its region above Udine and a little bit of Dolomiti.
Therefore, we ride via Hermagor and the empty Nassfeld

down into the really warm Channel Valley, crossing the Tagliamento several times to seek shelter from the heat in Tolmezzo in the Osteria Valle in the shade of the sun canvas.
Actually only planned as a short stop, it is a longer one because of the smell from the kitchen.
So we only fill up with petrol quickly, because without wind it became unbearably hot.
Hoping for more coolness in the mountains, we continue our trip to Ovaro. Further on Comeglians to Zovello (too much) and yes, indeed, it is really too much now.

And also the heat hasn’t decreased despite the higher altitude. Better rain and thunderstorms then!
So off to the north to the Plöckenpass which with its cool hairpin bends on the Italian side awakens our spirits again.
Afterwards we ride via Kötschach, Gailbergsattel and Oberdrauburg back to Gmünd, to the ice cream parlour to cool down.

However, the very dark clouds from the Maltatal shorten our stay and so we leave to return to the hotel.
5! Minutes later a cloudburst with epic dimensions, lucky us! And so the cooling down is there too.

Tour: 350 km
Weather: sunny and hot
traffic: less
